Where education currently stands...

Education is a system that is losing its importance in the younger generation. English is one of the main subjects that students are starting to decline in. Students in high schools are not grasping why English is needed, and are declining in their wanting to learn about the subject. It is not true for all students but there are more than enough students who question whether they should even bother. This can be mainly secluded to the students in the regular classes; they look at it as a subject they just need to get through and not as something they will need in their future. Some may argue that they are just children and do not need to really worry about these things yet, but if not in high school when are students supposed to be taking their classes seriously? If the student wants to apply to a university they will need to know how to write properly and they will need to take themselves seriously as well as their classes. Universities will not except a student who is lazy and lacking in the proper skills and drive to succeed. Not just in English but in all subjects as well. Though the blame cannot be placed all on the teachers, it is up to the student. The teacher can talk and try to drill in the importance about taking their education seriously but if the student refuses to listen there is nothing that can be done, unless the student themselves want to change. Parents can do their part by enforcing the importance of taking their education seriously. In my opinion English is one of the most important subjects a student will learn while in high school, this subject alone can show the students how to be a better writer and how to be able to read, as well as being able to use communication skills.

  1. Honestly I think that students have been declining in all of the main subjects for a while now. Especially because a large number of parents don't push their kids, because they also don't see what's so important about improving these skills. It is true that teachers can only do so much, but as a previously public educated student I can understand how you can blame the teacher too. Some have given up because their students have. They don't keep standards at the level they should, or raise the bar every now and then. I think fault can also be found in standardized testing. There is too much focus on having students pass these tests than anything else. Not all schools and teachers are like this, but it's too big of a problem to ignore. I remember when I first came to TLU and heard teachers say you probably read this or talked about this in high school. It was sort of embarrassing that I was not able to say yes or nod along with the majority of the class. Now the accomplishment of graduating in the top ten percent of my class has diminished for me - drastically.

  2. You do a good job of explaining why writing is important, and I agree; most high school kids just go to college to get through it. Some college kids do the same. But what is the point of going to school, anyway, if not to learn? Not wanting to study isn't a new problem; St. Augustine talks about the same thing in the 4th century. Of course, that could be part of the reason Rome fell in the first place... I'm interested to see where you go from here with your blog.

  3. Education has changed throughout the years. Students to me don't take education important as I seen when I was in high school. I see more and more students looking at college as a place to get away from home and to party. Students need to buckle down and see the importance in education, because without education life gets that much harder. Learning is hard, but studying is, but if a student really wants to be something in life they'll see importance in education.

  4. You are totally correct. English is important because it teaches you how to read and write correctly. In college English can be so hard sometimes because I didn't take it as serious as i should have when i was in high school. I encourage all students to take English /Reading and Writing very serious in high school as well as everything else because when you get to college your going to need all of those tools in order to succeed. O and your also going to need them to write those 10 -20 page papers. Great Post I feel high school students and younger students can really learn a lot from this post. Also Check out my blog on childhood obesity!!!

  5. What bothers me is that society in general is moving away from written text and transferring information into a visual format. Note the difference between a fast food chain's menu and one from a higher end restaurant. Since fast food places generally serve more people they have converted their menu to pictures so that even uneducated people can still order food. It has to stop! This world needs educated people! Thank you for posting!
