There are great
possibilities to having an English degree, or knowing a lot about English in
general. Being able to understand harder vocabulary is one, this is a very nice
ability to have. In a work place or even when going to a place of high class
you would be expected to have a higher vocabulary. This does happen believe it
or not, personally I got stuck in a job interview and I had a hard time
understanding the type of language he was using. I later found out it was a higher
form of English and that I had way more to learn. Of course this doesn’t happen
with all interviews just the ones where you get a professional job. NOT a fast
food job, or at the mall kind of job, a real job where you are doing your major
or what you primarily studied for. Another thing that is good about an English
degree is that while there are not many jobs that you can do your English
degree alone, you can still be able to have fun. Jobs that are available are
writing novels, though you cannot sustain yourself on only this, going to work
for a newspaper Colum, working at a book store, these are for starters. Getting
into the major works are harder, there are very few job offerings. These would
be business type jobs though, very sophisticated job for highly educated
people. These jobs can pay very well, but some cannot, it really just depends
on where you go and what you choose to do.

Past to Present
Over the years English
has started to become less and less important. Why is this? Well I have come to
believe that this is happening because of how efficient our technology is. Not
that it’s a bad thing, no technology is great, but some people take it for
granted and miss use it. English first started with the pen and paper, weird
right. You would think ... hey didn’t it start with a book? Nope, sadly it
didn’t! People had to write these books in order for others to read them right?
Well that’s how I have come to know how the study of English started. The
people of our past took this subject so seriously, way more than we do today
and that is quite a shame. They were very intelligent people, and knew more
than we do today. Before you get all defensive … think about it. How much would
you really know about a subject without technology to help you every time you
got stuck? I know I probably wouldn’t know as much as I do today. The people of
today do not use their brains as much as the people from back then did; this is
a fact that should be common. They had no technology to help them; in fact they
were the ones who invented our easy lives and as such gave us an easy ticket to
learn more. So then why is it that our willingness to learn is declining when
they so clearly paved the way for our success?

The future of English
English- is a very powerful
subject. Having the power to write can be a big help in society as a whole.
This is because it has become a very dependable way to get in touch with
people. Whether by letter, which rarely happens anymore, E-mail, which is become
less and less, or by text, that is growing rapidly. Knowing how to write is
very useful and knowing how to communicate with others is important. English
has helped this by bringing in concepts that can make most people want to learn
and want to know how they can better themselves. This is because knowing this
can make a person appear more intelligent and be able to hold a conversation
that will make sense and not confuse others. English in my opinion can change
the world, but mainly I believe is can change society. When someone goes in for
a job interview they will need to know proper language, even when talking to an
adult or someone older then you. It is always good to talk to them with
respect; English can teach you this as well as the right things to say. You
would not talk to your elders the way you would talk to you friends, this is
considered rude and can give the person a bad reputation amongst others. Though
knowing how to use Language right as knowing how to address others is what
English is really made for. Looking at novels is a great way to understand how
English can help. When reading a novel the person can tell automatically if
they author is addressing a particular crowd. We can learn a lot from authors
and elderly. They know in my opinion how to be proper and in what situations. It
is not true for everything but for most things it can give a person some idea.
The future for English in my opinion is that if it is not taken seriously in
the schools starting at a young age it may disappear with the younger
generation. Since computers have made it easier for us to communicate with each
other is has also given us a reason to be lazy and that is not good. People
think less and try to find easier ways of doing almost everything. Even typing
as gone down a lot, people are starting to come up with abbreviations on how to
spell different words and even use them in their everyday lives. This is not
all bad but when students start to bring it into the classroom or even into a
work place it is a big problem. There is a time and place for this and in
schools is not one of those times. Working for a better future is always a must,
but maybe learning that English is needed very much is something worth working
for, especially if it can give the person a better advantage at a real future,
and not a fabricated one.

Where education currently stands...
Education is a system that is
losing its importance in the younger generation. English is one of the main
subjects that students are starting to decline in. Students in high schools are
not grasping why English is needed, and are declining in their wanting to learn
about the subject. It is not true for all students but there are more than
enough students who question whether they should even bother. This can be
mainly secluded to the students in the regular classes; they look at it as a
subject they just need to get through and not as something they will need in
their future. Some may argue that they are just children and do not need to
really worry about these things yet, but if not in high school when are
students supposed to be taking their classes seriously? If the student wants to
apply to a university they will need to know how to write properly and they
will need to take themselves seriously as well as their classes. Universities
will not except a student who is lazy and lacking in the proper skills and
drive to succeed. Not just in English but in all subjects as well. Though the
blame cannot be placed all on the teachers, it is up to the student. The teacher
can talk and try to drill in the importance about taking their education
seriously but if the student refuses to listen there is nothing that can be
done, unless the student themselves want to change. Parents can do their part
by enforcing the importance of taking their education seriously. In my opinion
English is one of the most important subjects a student will learn while in
high school, this subject alone can show the students how to be a better writer
and how to be able to read, as well as being able to use communication
skills.
